Maybe making chocolate pudding from scratch is no big deal to most people, but somehow I doubt it. Jello pudding is so common that I'm sure it's the route most people take when they want a little chocolate dessert.
But today I used an old family recipe to make chocolate pudding--NOT from a box. ;-)
In going through a lot of Aunt Bunny's papers, I found a handwritten collection of her recipes. I remember having made this pudding many years ago from her recipe, but it's been a long while.
I gathered the ingredients: milk, sugar, butter, eggs, vanilla, cocoa, flour, cornstarch and salt. I had to improvise a double boiler, but it worked fine. The recipe gave very few directions.
I'd recommend sifting the dry ingredients together before adding to the milk/egg/butter/vanilla mix. Stirring constantly for 10-12 minutes or so, waiting for the conglomeration to thicken was the most exciting part. It becomes pudding before your very eyes. :-)
The original recipe calls for separating the eggs so you can add meringue to the top of the pudding. I opted to skip the meringue and serve the pudding with Cool Whip instead. Yummy!
I think I have this same recipe in my box from A.Bunny...and I think I made it once or twice. I remember it being good, but I would probably opt for the box for convenience.

I also have a family recipe for homemade chocolate pudding, and you're right - it's wonderful. No comparison to the boxed stuff - even the cooked boxed stuff, which you can hardly find anymore, and much less the instant kind.
Kids today have no idea what they're missing out on when it comes to taste and "the real thing" - not only in chocolate pudding, but so many things.
Sounds like a possibility for a post. :-)
