Just as John predicted in the comments on my previous post, the media have begun to critique President Bush's secret visit to Iraq. Was the secrecy warranted, asks the WP's Howard Kurtz. As Jeff Jarvis says on his blog BuzzMachine, "You can tell it grates Kurtz that he couldn't find every journalist agreeing with his proposition." One of the more reasonable CBS journalists (at least in my opinion)--Bob Scheiffer--said, "In this case, it's justified. It was extremely important for the president to demonstrate that he's willing to go where those young men and women he sent over there have gone." Kim Hume, Fox's Washington bureau chief, said, "Had more journalists been told, the story would have leaked in about two seconds" because "news people are the biggest gossips alive."
